Start-ups and small companies aren’t for everyone. How do you find out if an entrepreneurial business environment is right for you?

Nothing beats being there. Getting a few months, weeks, or even days of on-the-job experience in a small company is well worth the effort. Even if you decide afterwards that it’s not for you, you’ll probably have a better understanding of what you are looking for. A plush office and a personal assistant, perhaps?

Many UC campuses provide help to students looking for internships in small companies. Check the links below to see highlights of what your campus has to offer.

Work Experience in Entrepreneurial Businesses:

UC Berkeley: Coming February 23, 2005: Internship & Summer Job Fair. Also see company directories from previous fairs and grad student internship advice.

UC Davis: Coming February 17, 2005: Winter Internship and Career Fair: Biotech, Agricultural, Business, Environmental, Food, Winery and Health. General info for grad students and postdocs is also available.

UC Irvine: For local opportunities, the University Research Park houses 44 tenant companies, in addition to faculty start-up companies.

UCLA: Archived lists of companies who have recruited recently at UCLA for interns or full- time employees are available. A workshop on internships for PhDs in Sciences and Engineering is offered in the Spring Quarter.

UC Riverside: Coming February 10, 2005: Engineering Career Connections

UC San Diego: Resources for graduate students and general internship/career fairs.

UCSF: Coming April 7; 2005: Career Fair focused on life sciences, includes Bay Area companies small and large, in the biotech/pharmaceutical field.

UC Santa Barbara: socalTECH lists many entrepreneurial high tech and life science companies in and around Santa Barbara.

UC Santa Cruz: Internship resources for graduate students.
