Issue 4: Aug/Sept 2004

A Resource for UC Discovery Grant Students

Aug/Sep Focus: Help is at hand - entrepreneurship centers at UC

Meeting experienced entrepreneurs, vetting a business strategy, brushing up on some management skills, getting some expert advice, all from the comfort of your campus? Or even your department? Sooner or later you will have to leave the lab, but you may not have to go very far.

UC has several entrepreneurship centers, offering a range of services and support for students and faculty interested in or currently involved in starting a business. The centers are usually associated with campus engineering or management schools, but many services are available to students outside those schools too - and if not, it's worth asking, since many centers are expanding their programs.

At UCSB engineering and science students learn business and entrepreneurial skills in interdisciplinary classes and extra-curricular activities with students from across campus through the newly developing Technology Management Program within the College of Engineering. The program’s curriculum and the significant extra-curricular activities of the Center for Entrepreneurship and Engineering Management (CEEM) provide a powerful way for students to jump start their careers. As a recent graduate student put it,” These courses and the business plan competition got me my job at a Bay area start-up for more salary and more options then I would have ever believed”. Or the most common student feedback, “Best courses I’ve taken!”

UCSB Technology Management courses include: ENGR185A, “The Art of the CEO: Business Basics for Future Leaders”; ENGR185B, “New Venture Creation: Entrepreneurship”; ENGR185C, “Business Planning for New Technology Ventures”; ENGR185C,”New Product Development”; ENGR191/291A, “Entrepreneurial Marketing”; ENGR191/292B, “Financial Modeling for Entrepreneurs and Project Managers”, and ENGR191/291C, “Transitioning from Technologist to Manager”.
