As part of the IUCRP's strategic planning process, the Pilot Project was launched in June 2006 to explore emerging opportunities for highly innovative industry-university research partnerships that can help California solve important problems and simultaneously accelerate the economic development in the following three areas:

1) energy and environment;
2) health and wellness; and
3) rapid application of nanotechnologies.

The Pilot Project seeks both to draw new ideas for advances engaging the IUCRP’s five ongoing technology areas and to identify opportunities in a wide array of other technology areas. Entirely new fields of science and engineering have emerged in recent years where the IUCRP, if expanded, could help strategically position UC and California R&D industries for leadership in the highly competitive global arena.

These areas complement and extend the IUCRP’s traditional focus on biotechnology, communications and networking, digital media, electronics manufacturing, and information technology for life sciences. Special advantages of this Pilot Project include greater breadth and flexibility in the scientific and technological research scope and an interdisciplinary expert peer review process.

Proposals are being solicited for UC Discovery Grant funding in the 2007-08 academic year (Fall and Spring only). Proposed project periods may range from one to four years. Note: This Call is offered in addition to and simultaneously with the standard Fall, Winter, and Spring Requests for Proposals in the Program’s five technology fields (i.e., biotechnology, communications and networking, digital media, electronics manufacturing, and information technology for life sciences).
