The UC Discovery Grant brand name is adopted,
and sector names are retired (BioSTAR, CoRe, DiMI, SMART,

The IUCRP begins accepting multi-field,
interdisciplinary research proposals. |

The IUCRP unveils a more sophisticated, new
online proposal system, allowing Principal Investigators
and Private Sponsors to submit research proposals online.

| 1999 - 2000 |
The State of California increases its investment
in the IUCRP to $24.6 million/yr (21.6 million from
the state, $3 million from UC). Industry responds enthusiastically
with matching funds. Total funding, including private contributions,
approach $60 million/yr. |

The IUCRP expands into the field of Information
Technology for Life Sciences. Focus areas include high
tech, healthcare, agriculture, and environmental technology
challenges.
The IUCRP expands into the field of Communications
and Networking. The goal is to support new research on
communication systems and components that will enable anywhere,
anytime communications. |

The State of California increases its investment
in the IUCRP to $15 million/yr ($12 million from the
state, $3 million from UC). Industry responds enthusiastically
with matching funds. Total funding, including private contributions,
exceeds $30 million/yr. |
| Feb. 1998 |
The IUCRP expands into the field of Digital
Media.
The IUCRP expands into field of Electronics
Manufacturing and New Materials to help advance research
and training in electronics manufacturing. |
| Summer 1996 |
Under
the leadership of President Richard Atkinson, the IUCRP is
founded at UC Berkeley as a single-field biotechnology program.
Initial base funding is $3 million from UC, and quickly
grows to $8 million with a $5 million contribution from the
State of California. Applications carry commitments of nearly
$8 million in cash from California biotech firms in just 3
months.
